When I was younger and my dad would take me to visit my grandparents in Oklahoma we would always pass the same old abandoned wharehouse. One day my dad told me it sometimes substituted as a place for dog fights. Dog fights? I had no idea what this was and when it dawned upon me what the sport was I was horrified. Today I came across an article on a lady named Diane Jessup's site. She was writing about the more "noble" traits of dog fighting and criticizing groups like PETA and others for their actions against the fights. Her logic was that by making laws against the sport the good people who "took care" of their dogs were drawn away from it. By that logic, making marijuana illegal forced government officials to stop smoking and then the act gained its bad reputation. This makes no sense and is wrong. However, my point is that there is no noble act in training animals to maim each other and kill each other simply to make money or win a bet. It is wrong on so many levels. These animals become cruel and viscous and never know what it is to be loved. Pit bulls have a bad reputation and I have personally seen them kill and maim innocent animals, but centuries of being trained to act this way is why the animals sometimes do act out. The continuation of dog fights would only further this problem. PETA and the other humane organizations that act against these animal abusers need support. That is the only way this horrible crime can one day come to an end.

Dear Ms. Taylor,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree!! Dog fighting is wrong. They also do it with chickens (or is it roosters?) in some places. It's a terrible sport.
I'm astonished that somebody tried to defend dog fighting. There's nothing good that comes of it- except the guys who are hurting those poor dogs are gaining money from the bets. I'm sure she had many holes in her story.
While I agree that organizations that support animals should be helped, I disagree with you about PETA. I feel PETA is a very ignorant group. My friend was participating in a dog show where PETA let all the show dogs loose from their kennels. They wanted to free the dogs. But because they'd been pampered all their lives, they didn't know how to avoid cars in the street. Many of them ran into a nearby main road and got hit and killed.
You had a really good topic. Thanks for posting!

Dear Taylor,
ReplyDeleteA few years ago, when I was in middle school, a dog fighting operation was found just a few miles from my house. Dog fighting is a real problem, and it's terrible that people would even 'think' of exploiting these poor canines for a chance to get some money. The fact that you found someone who supports dog fighting is so sad, but I know there are quite a lot of people out there with the same mindset.
While I agree that dog fighting needs to be stopped, I don't think PETA is the one who's goind to stop it. PETA is way too 'extremist' in their thinking, and often ends up causing more trouble than good when they set out to fix a problem.
Dear Hannah Taylor,
ReplyDeleteI feel as though the issue with dog fighting is one that needs to be stopped and with your blog post it is easy to see that you feel the same. As a dog owner I couldn’t imagine putting my dog into a ring where they would fight to the death.
I like how you used a story to show how appalled you were when you first learned of dog fighting. This is what really sets the attitude for the blog, because each time I read over it I kept getting the vibe at this point that this is something you will not stand for.
These animals become cruel and viscous and never know what it is to be loved. This quote is what stands out the most in your blog. That is because it is true and that is why dog fighting needs to be stopped. Dogs should be for pets, not fighting for entertainment.
Thank you Hannah for writing this post because I haven’t seen too many of these posts on this issue and there should be more than there is. I hope that you keep writing post similar to this and one and I look forward to reading more of your posts, till then good luck.
Dear Hannah,
ReplyDeleteFirst off I wanted to tell you that I really appreciate this post. It's not everyday that people take a stand against dog fighting. One of my family's dog was attacked and almost killed by a pit bull that was trained to be violent so I have a connection to this topic.
I like that you stated that there is no noble act in dog fighting. This stood out to me because it just shocks me that there are actually people out there that think there is something good in the practice. It just blows my mind completely.
I really agree with you that PETA and other groups like them need more support. PETA is a group that is trying to put a stop to the mistreatment of these dogs. In doing that they are also making an impact to stop the training that makes these dogs vicious killers.
I really enjoyed your post. Your passion about your topic will definitely inspire me to read more of your posts. Thank you so much for sharing.
